Getting a car or van out of a police pound requires the right towing trucks and equipment. Standard breakdown trucks are often not allowed inside the compound by the yard staff due to safety rules. ARB uses large flatbed trucks designed to load and carry vehicles safely when you are not allowed to drive them away yourself.
01. Stolen & Recovered Cars
When a stolen car or van is found by the police in London, they tow it to a secure pound so they can check it over for evidence. Once the police have finished their checks, they will contact you to let you know that you can come and collect your vehicle from the yard.
The big problem is that stolen cars almost always have broken ignitions, damaged steering columns, smashed windows, or the keys are completely missing. Trying to start or force a damaged car to move can ruin the car's wiring or lock up the wheels completely, making it impossible to steer or roll.

02. "Lift & Shift" Rules (No MOT or Tax)
A lot of people think that once they get a valid insurance note, they can just walk into the police pound, turn the key, and drive their car out of the gates. This is not how it works. The staff at the desk will run quick computer checks on your vehicle before they let it go.
If the computer shows that your car does not have a valid MOT, or it does not have active road tax, driving it onto the public road is illegal. Because of this, the pound staff will give a strict order called a "Lift and Shift." This means your car is not allowed to touch the ground—it has to leave on the back of a professional transport truck.
How ARB Helps: ARB has all the right commercial insurance and paperwork to do these lifts inside the yard. While you finish off your paperwork at the front desk, our driver will handle the physical loading in the release bay, securing the car tightly with wheel straps so it is 100% legal to travel.
03. Accident & Collision Towing
If your car was involved in a bad crash or collision on a busy London road, the police will usually have it towed away to a safe compound to clear the traffic. If a car has bent body panels, broken axles, leaking fluids, or wheels pointing in the wrong direction, you cannot drive it away.
Because storage fees can add up every single day that the car sits in the pound, it is important to act quickly to avoid a big bill. Damaged cars cannot be towed with standard ropes or a basic tow bar without causing severe, permanent damage to the bumpers, engine, and gearbox.

Perivale Pound FAQ
Can a friend collect the car for me?
Only if you provide them with a signed **Letter of Authority** and copies of your ID. However, the Perivale pound staff prefer the owner to be present. ARB can facilitate the transport once you have cleared the paperwork.
What payment methods does Perivale Pound accept?
Most Metropolitan Police pounds accept major credit and debit cards. They generally do not accept cash or personal cheques.
Can I get my belongings from the car?
You can usually visit the pound to collect personal items (but not parts of the car) if you bring proof of ownership and ID, even if you aren't ready to release the vehicle yet.
